Exploring Lotu and Wellbeing in Tongan Communities
Understanding the impact of faith and religiosity on wellbeing and health decisions during COVID-19.
Our Mission and Insights
The Lotu Factor Project is a Health Research Council-funded study examining how faith—lotu—influenced the wellbeing, beliefs and health decisions of Tongan communities in Aotearoa New Zealand during COVID-19. We recognise that lotu can provide hope, resilience, meaning, trusted leadership and practical support.
However, some religious interpretations may also encourage misinformation, stigma, distrust of medical advice or the belief that faith alone protects people from illness. Through our research, we aim to strengthen cooperation among churches, families, health providers and policymakers.
